Perfection Revisited

Perfection Revisited

30 Day Blogging Challenge #29

One major thing I’ve learned during this blogging challenge– I like to word vomit.  I really do. It’s fun.

Let’s go back to my little ~chat~ on perfection.  The notion of perfection isn’t real, what is real is you.  As a society we build these walls, and we build these canvases of so-called standards that are impossible to live up to.

When did our world become one of comparison? When did our would become one of putting more glory on other people than on ourselves? When did we lose the importance of self love? When did we begin to live for other people’s ideals?

It’s sad.  It’s really sad.  I wrote about this a bit in my blog post — pretty sure I should just start calling them blog rants — called You Are Not Selfish I focused in on the misconception that putting yourself first is in no way, shape, or form selfish.  And that when we are born, we are born with the right to own our lives and control them– nobody else has that right in terms of your life.

I get really frustrated when I see our world conforming to social ideals that have been engraved into our brains.  When the reality is, what makes the world beautiful is the diversity we give it.  What makes the world grow is each and every person adding their own unique contribution.

Nobody in the world is better at being you than you are.  So, I have one question…

Why on Earth would you give up the immense power you are given to create yourself?

I know it is much easier said than done, but you should not feel pressure to do something because it is cool, or because everybody is doing it. You should not change your feelings about something because the people around you disagree. You should not hide from chasing your dreams because you are worried about what others will think.  Most importantly, you should not live your life for others.

You should live your life for yourself.

We all are given one life to live, why waste is chasing outside satisfaction when you can spend it finding happiness and inner peace?

Perfection is you.  You are perfection.  You have it already, there is no need to chase it, because then— you are running from it.

Act Without Knowing The Result

Act Without Knowing The Result

30 Day Blogging Challenge #24

I am tired of hearing I want.  To me, it’s almost as bad as I can’t.  You can tell me you want something as much as you desire, but what is the changing?  Please enlighten me, please explain to me this epidemic of wanting wanting wanting and walking through life continuing to want, being pulled by commonality and a monotonous daily routine without changing that want into have.  I am tired of hearing it.  If you want something, please realize right this very second that it is yours.   It may not be easy.  It may take time.  It may take sacrifice.  But if you want something enough to continually verbalize, or even think, about wanting it, for the sake of yourself, please take it.

(please watch^)

We grow up completing tasks and doing things for a reason. Your boss wants you to rearrange the filing cabinets, so you do it.  Your professor wants you to read a case study, so you do it.  Your mom wants you to walk the dog, so you do it.  All our lives, we prioritize the things that have reason.  We do things of which we know the outcome.

But did you ever think of the possibility of beginning a task without knowing what the result will be? Perpetually, that scares us because we have been Pavlonian-programmed to hop on to tasks that are not open ended.  We have done just that all of our lives.

So, that is why when we say we want [something] we rarely ever work towards [that thing].  We are unsure of how to jump into a world of unknown.  We are uncomfortable not having ‘reason’ and concrete confidence.  We aren’t used to it.   We are programmed to minimize uncertainty.

But that is life.  Life is uncertainty, that is the thrill of it. There is nothing wrong with that feeling, it is just one we have to get used to.  It is one that when we do get used to, will open up endless doors into endless opportunities.

Did you ever realize that you can change your want immediately into more if you just do.  Did you ever realize that there is no time more perfect than now?

Sure, uncertainty is unsettling but it is also rewarding and thrilling, it’s healthy.  It results in mental growth, change, and personality building.

And sure, you may fail, but one: we’ve talked about this before, and two: you may succeed beyond imagination.

Further than making your want into have, learning to do things for the mere reason of doing them is a skill to own.  Mark Manson put it perfectly:

Developing the ability to simply do things for no other reason than curiosity or interest or hell, even boredom — the ability to do things with no expectation for result or accolade or productivity or fanfare — will train you to better make these big ambiguous life decisions. It will train you to simply start on something without knowing where in the hell it’s going.

It can be scary, yes.  But it can also be one of the most rewarding talents you could ever learn.

I challenge you to do something over the next week for the mere hell of it.

I challenge you to stop saying I want and just do.

One more time for good measure.

Don’t be afraid of the unknown, YouMakeYou!

Colby

Tips To Balance a Busy Life

Tips To Balance a Busy Life

30 Day Blogging Challenge #23

Do you know the days when you feel like you were hit by a bus full of shit to do, when you have so much on your to do list that you don’t know where to start? Those days, yeah they happen, that’s life, it’s great.

I wrote and entire eBook on how to successfully balance health and happiness especially while in college (PEEP only $2.50 here) but I want to share a few tips with you today because it is just one of those weeks.  And when times get tough, blog it out.  That’s how it works right?

In all seriousness, if you could get through life scotch free, you deserve an award, no– you deserve more than an award, you deserve a country named after you.  As far as I’m concerned, that is impossible and that’s the first thing I want you to remember when you start to get overwhelmed.

Realize this is temporary.  A week from today you will be looking back from a better place.  You will look back and see how strong you were to make it through, you will realize that you have conquered a challenge.  Remember that.  Everything is temporary, and everything is OK in the end– if it’s not OK, it’s not the end.

OK Colby, cool, I can’t just ignore the issue at hand and focus on the future. TRUTH.  So, here is what you can do in the moment:

  •  Not sure how you are going to get everything done?  Schedule, prioritize, knuckle down, and schedule breaks.  Work one hour, give yourself 5 minutes to relax, repeat.  In the long run, the time off will come in handy, it keeps your mind at ease and body refreshed.
  • Most importantly, don’t overdo it.  Decide how long something should take, and then take that amount of time to do it.  Have to bring a dish to a friends house for a get-together? It is OK to buy something instead of spending an hour baking it. <– Overdoing it when you are stressed is not going to help.  This applies to everything including studying, writing papers, etc.  Don’t let the perfectionist side of you take over, not everything has to be done to more than needed.  Yes, that is coming from a perfectionist.
  • Make a mental, physical, and academic health priority goal at the beginning of each day.  You will probably get more than these things done, but at least you can start with both a plan AND a balance.  — Ellen Slater, MyUncommonEveryday
  • Try to let go of perfectionist urges, and learn to practice self-compassion, in short “treat yourself like you would a good friend”. — Hannah Heitz, Craving Happy
  • Change your perception on stress.  Read this.  That is all.

Comment below– what is your number one tip for dealing with stress?

See you tomorrow, YOU MAKE YOU!

Your Monday Challenge

Your Monday Challenge

30 Day Blogging Challenge #20

I have been blogging everyday for 20 days now… what.

Yes.

Honestly, it has been tough, there have been days where the last thing I wanted to do was sit down and write because there were a million other things on my to do list.  But, blogging makes me happy, therefore, as a self-loving gift to myself– I do it.  Just like I talked about in The Science of Happiness and Why We Don’t Do What We Love & How to Start, making time even when you don’t have it to spend time on yourself does make you happier.  And, as a result of that happiness, the rest of your life is boosted.

So on this beautiful motivation Monday I want to motivate you to write down three things that make you smile from the inside out, and vow to do each one at some point this week.

Maybe you schedule them into your day, maybe you do them when you are most stressed, maybe you do them everyday.  It is completely up to you what you do and when you do them, but make sure they get done, it’s happiness we are talking about here!

& Of course, who would I be if I didn’t send a little Motivation Monday your way :

tackle

See you tomorrow, YOU MAKE YOU!

You’re Not Selfish

You’re Not Selfish

30 Day Blogging Challenge #18

Far too often we are so busy hiding in fear that we cannot chase our dreams (yes– I’ve said this before). What is one of the biggest fears we collectively have? Others.

We fear what people will think of us.

We fear if what we do will make others happy.

We fear what will happen if we ‘stray from the norm’.

Honestly, I teeter on the edge of saying we fear each other.  Can you tell me the last time you did something for yourself? Can you tell me the last day you didn’t wonder what someone thought about you or something you did?  Can you tell me the last time you didn’t do something because you were scared of what someone would think?  Can you tell me the last time you said ‘fuck you’ to the world and didn’t allow others to enter your thoughts and decisions?

Can you?

hapy

Being a college student, I am immersed in this behavior.  Every day, every hour, I am surrounded by the worry of satisfying others; the self-questioning, the self comprise.

To put it in as few words as possible,  I see people living for someone else.

Putting aside the severe pressure of society to follow a stigmatized norm, I think there is an intense fear of coming off as selfish, and honestly I’m tired of it. It’s sad and it is killing our generation.

It is also a misconception, do you know what the definition of selfish is?

Selfish; lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure.

Being completely and utterly wrapped up in yourself to a point where you are inconsiderate of others, that is selfish.

Deciding you don’t want to go to an event because you aren’t feeling it, that isn’t selfish.  You are allowed to enjoy different things.

Spending your time differently than those around you, that isn’t selfish. Your happiness is what matters most.

Not being able to be there for everyone’s dilemmas all of the time, that isn’t selfish.  You need to take care of yourself first.

Being or not being friends with someone your other friends aren’t/are, that isn’t selfish.  You choose what/who is apart of your life.

Getting rid of something negative in your life despite any outside influence that may be present, that isn’t selfish.  You deserve more than negativity.

Taking time for yourself, that isn’t selfish. It’s your life.

Deciding to stop being the sounding board for everyone else’s problems, that isn’t selfish. It’s not fair to you, you deserve more.

Not following the ‘social norm’, that isn’t selfish. We need more of that in this world.

Saying ‘screw this’ and completely uprooting to put yourself and your happiness first, that isn’t selfish.  This is your life, nobody else’s.

Following your dreams, even if they don’t line up with those around you perfectly, that isn’t selfish,

That is self loving.

That is what you were put here to do.

You have one life to live.

One.

The question is, will you make it the one you want?

You are the sole person in control.

#YouMakeYou

Perfection Isn’t Real

Perfection Isn’t Real

30 Day Blogging Challenge #15.

Here was my day yesterday:

7:30 wakeup

7:40 begin 8 mile run

8:50 struggle to finish 8 mile run without throwing up

9:00 decide the fact that my stomach has hurt 24/7 for the past two weeks  and ^ happening meant it was time to go to Urgent Care

9:20 get a completely flat tire on the way there, I’m talking 100 to 0 in 5 seconds

9:30 call my parents bawling my eyes out because everything was going wrong

9:40 get my shit together enough to leave my car and take a taxi to and from Urgent Care

11:30 return from Urgent Care where they put me on an antibiotic because they were unsure what was up

11:40 call AAA to fix my tire

1:00 AAA puts a donut on my tire, I tip him $20 because that is the only bill  I had on me, and I make animg_0015 appointment at Goodyear for 3pm to get a real tire

1:oo-2:45 I attempt to make up some of the work I was missing in classes that day

3:00-5:20 sit at Goodyear, still with stomach pain, until my car is fixed

6:00-7:00 bike at the gym until enough stress was released

8:00-an hour ago sleep 12 hours and pretend like yesterday didn’t happen

I didn’t post this for sympathy, or anything like that at all.  I posted this because I am human, everyone is human, and being human means not everything will be glitter and rainbows all of the time.  Not everything will be perfect, and that is OK.  I posted this because I get too many emails and DM’s asking how I keep my sh!t together so well, how I keep my mindset on right all of the time, how I live so “perfectly” and as much as I love hearing from each and everyone of you (srsly keep it up), just because I run a blog and an IG, that does not make me any different from you! I have hiccups in the road, exhibit 100000^ and of course I have days where I am just not feelin it.  We all do. There is a quote

“There is a crack in everything, that is how the light gets in.”

and that quote is the truth.  Sure, maybe I don’t post my struggles on here as often as I post the better moments, but the tougher times are the ones that teach me lessons, the ones that make me stronger, the ones that ground me and push me to remember what I am here for.  Times like yesterday are the ones that challenge me, the ones that change me, the ones that help me become me.

The bad days are there for a reason–we just have to accept them, let them build us, and move on.

As perfect as you can try to be, and take it from a type a perfectionist… perfection. isn’t. real. YOU are real.

See you tomorrow– You Make You!

Colby

Stress Is Good // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #13

Stress Is Good // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #13

If there is one thing in this world that anyone could relate to, it would be stress.  Stress is inevitable.

Let’s break it down.

Stress; a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension.

OK, so stress is a state of being that causes tension. Let’s define tension.

Tension; inner striving, unrest, or imbalance often with physiological indication of emotion.

But, that is not the only definition of tension.  In artwork,

Tension;  a balance maintained in an artistic work between opposing forces or element.

The point I am trying to make here, is that tension and stress are not, by definition, negative rather they have become perceived as negative by the world we live in.  By definition stress causes tension in the body, and tension is nothing more than something being out of it’s normal state.

We live in a world where stress is one of the most common factors to daily life, and with that, stress has developed a negative connotation.  I don’t want to sit here and tell you that stress is all great for you, but I do want to challenge you to change your perception on stress and see how your body reacts.

What if you perceived stress as positive? What if when your heart was racing and you were nervous, instead of letting an uncomfortable feeling take over, you told yourself that these things are happening to you because your body is ramping up for the challenge, your body is helping you prepare for what is ahead?  What if you believed the feelings you are experiencing are your body’s way of saying ‘I got this!’?

What if when you are sitting at your desk feeling stressed about work, instead of feeling overwhelmed, you use that as your body’s warning sign to take a step back, take a deep breathe, and make a nice schedule for yourself.

What if instead of letting stress stress you out, you let stress assist you in staying in tune with yourself.

What if you stopped giving stress the power to hold you back and instead allowed it to motivate you forward.

This is all as simple as a decision to change your mindset, this is what YouMakeYou® is about– realizing that YOU are the one with the power to control your life and then TAKING that power.

Will you take the challenge?

Colby

Changes I’ve Made That Have Changed Me // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #7

Changes I’ve Made That Have Changed Me // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #7

I don’t know why I keep bobbling back and forth between deep, serious blogs and lighthearted easily read blogs.  It’s like my indecisiveness with lattes and black coffee… every other day its the opposite.  I’m a woman with many interests, ya know?

gd

I’m sitting in my favorite cafe on campus, thinking about how much I’ve changed over the past two-ish years in college.  I don’t know what spurred me to do this, but it excites me.  I find it so easy to get wrapped up in the speed of life and the comfort of routine.  This is actually one of the changes I have made.  Before college, I was always so routine based.  I knew what I liked, I knew what I had to do, I found what worked for me, and I kept doing it. I didn’t like last minute changes, I didn’t like other people affecting my plans.  With the monotonous schedule of school I, more often than not, did the exact same thing every day.  I grew to love my routine to the point where I couldn’t fathom making a change any  given day.  After going away to college, I have begun to not live without a schedule, but live without a rigid routine.  I say ‘yes’ to things I would have said ‘no’ to before out of refusal to leave my routine.  I enjoy spontaneity.  I am able to learn so much more about myself and experience the world greater than before just because I am open to it.  By simply giving up my type-A schedule based mindset, I have begun the have some of the best experiences of my life.

This isn’t the only change I have made with myself over the past few years…

+ I stopped guzzling down my coffee from a to-go mug and started waiting to drink a cup until I have time to sit down and enjoy it.

+ I started making time, even when I “don’t have it” , to do things that make me happy.

+ I stopped spending time on people who don’t spend time on me.

+ I gave up the fear of failure and started trying things I didn’t think I would be successful at.  run

+ I stopped getting rattled when I couldn’t make it to the gym.

+ I stopped washing my hair every time I showered, no joke this is a thing, you’re not supposed to.

+ I started doing things for me and stopped feeling selfish about it.

+  I started respect-fully not spending time with people who bring me down.

+ I started making a large effort to spend time with those who bring me up and make me happy.

+ I stopped apologizing unnecessarily.

+ I stopped eating food I don’t actually  like.

+ I stopped doing things because I thought I should and started doing things because I wanted to.

+ I started establishing and recognizing what is important to me.

+ I gave up the belief that I had to be doing work every second of every day.

+ And, I gave up the belief that life is a race to what you will become.

If I was to wrap all of these changes up in one point, it would be that I started to get to know and trust myself, and I realized that the most important thing for me, and for you in your life, is to let yourself be the center of your life.  It is not selfish.  We all have one life to live, we can’t waste is concerned about what others think, we can’t waste it hiding in fear, we can’t waste it programmed to a routine of comfort, we need to spend it chasing our own happiness.

YOU MAKE YOU!

I want to know, what is a change you have made lately? Comment below!

See you tomorrow!

Motivation Monday // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #6

Happy Day 6 of my 30 Day Blogging Challenge! I’m really enjoying this so far, I hope you are too. Leave me a comment, let me know what you think, what do you want to read about?! Did you catch yesterday’s post on the Science of Happiness?

But, more importantly happy Motivation Monday…. this post was almost inevitable  #amiright?  I literally speak in motivational quotes.  You make you.

Have you ever just wanted a massive all-inclusive  list of empowering quotes?  That’s what I’m here for today… to share with you my all time favorite motivational quotes. But, that’s not all, I have a challenge for you.

Choose your favorite one(s) and recite it to yourself at three different times each day for the next week. Screenshot it, set it as your background, set and alarm in your phone… do whatever you have to do to make your quote a part of your life for the next week and see what happens.

This is called the law of attraction– like attracts like, the more you think something the more you attract it. YOU MAKE YOU, get it 😉

THE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES !!

The only difference between try and triumph is a little umph.

These mountains you are carrying, you were only meant to climb.

Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.

Strong is what happens when you run out of weak.

Far too often we are so busy hiding in fear that we cannot chase our dreams.

Failure buries us, but seeds are also buried, that is how they come alive.

You have  got to want it, not kind of want it.

Run your life, don’t let your life run you.

Don’t lose power by thinking you don’t have any.

Be one of a million, not one in a million.

Don’t look back and ask ‘why?’, look forward and ask ‘why not?’

Clear your mind of can’t.

You’ve got to want it more than you are afraid of it.

Have the courage to fail.

If not you, who? If not now, when?

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

There are cracks in everything, that is how the light gets in.

What is a motivational quote that always gets you going?  I challenge you to post a picture of that quote on Instagram with the #YouMakeYou today!

xoxo,

Colby

Running Strong in the Rain // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #4

Running Strong in the Rain // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #4

Not all runs are perfect.  Especially when you are training for a race, there are bound to be days that the weather won’t be on your side, but you still have to train.  You could always run on the treadmill, but if you are like me and are forever scarred by the 15 mile run on a treadmill during which you watched the morning news loop 3 TIMES through, you would choose to run in the pouring rain than on a machine for three hours.   Also, running in the rain is refreshing, it is a new challenge, it adds a new dimension to your game, and honestly it is cool.  Now, if it is storming… DO NOT RUN OUTSIDE.  I repeat, do not!! But, if it isn’t … I challenge you to GO FOR IT!  Who knows, maybe race day will be overcast and rainy and you know what they always say: ‘Nothing new on race day’.  You don’t want the first time you experience running in bad weather to be on race day.

Today I ran 17 miles in rain, the pouring rain to be exact.  My clothes were soaked to the bone.
running_rain

HERE ARE MY TIPS FOR YOU TO CONQUER THE RAIN:

  • Hat.  Wear a hat, it will get soaked, but it will prevent you from having to clear your eyes every other second.  Plus, you get to watch the rain drip from the rim.
  • Knock out as many senses as possible.  The fewer senses that are perceiving the rain, the less you focus on it.  Put in headphones and turn that music up so you can’t hear the rain.  Wear long sleeves, long pants, and a hat so you don’t feel the rain hitting your skin.  ETC.  Keep your eyes open though.  Please keep your eyes open.
  • Realize that RAIN COMES IN CYCLES.  It really does. It will rain lightly, then v aggressively, and then back to lightly.  When it’s aggressive, don’t panic, don’t think about quitting and looking for shelter to call your mom to pick you up — it would take my mom 4 hours so — just RUN IT OUT.   The aggressive stage will pass, it will lighten up, and then hold on to the memories of the light rain when it gets aggressive again.
  • Avoid running where cars are moving.  Even if that means running on a sidewalk instead of asphalt, it is better to take the hit one day than to get soaked by a car driving past.
  • Don’t complain.  Have ZERO negative thoughts.  Imagine a beautiful day if you have to.  Just don’t let negativity enter your head.  As soon as it does, you make it that much harder for yourself.
  • AS SOON AS YOU GET BACK get out of your wet clothes.  Your body temperature is going to drop.  Fast.  You want to be out of the soaking wet clothes and in something comfortable so you can drain you legs like usual and worry about showering later…. the rain was your shower, right?

rain_run

I want to know, do you like to run in the rain? Do you have any tips to share?

ALWAYS REMEMBER, YOU MAKE YOU!

xoxo,

Colby

See you for day 5 tomorrow!
