7 Thoughts That Changed My Life

7 Thoughts That Changed My Life

Six months ago,

a lot changed.  I quit being Instagram famous, and I temporarily moved to a new city.   Both of those things, along with much else, made me become more of my true, and happiest self.

I quit being IG famous

It’s not that I was ever unhappy,

it’s just that I was never living my true happiness.  And, as beautiful as it is now, that honestly scares me sh!tless because I didn’t know that I wasn’t happy before now.  While I genuinely think a big portion of me digging deeper into becoming who I am as a person had to do with leaving the spotlight of 35,000 Instagram followers.  I owe a massive thank you to the incredible people who came into my life over the past half year.

So, thank you for being the person I am for other people, but haven’t learned to be for myself.

You know exactly who you are, and I can’t even begin to express how much you mean to me.   A majority of these lessons were learned from you…

With all of the sappiness out of the way and though I usually wait until the end of a school year for a “what I learned” recap; if you can change someone’s perspective on something, why wait? #amiright SO  . . .

7 Thoughts That Changed My Life in 2k17

1. Some doors slam on you, some doors you quietly close; but either way, they are meant to be shut.

Believe me.

2. Feel your feelings.

This one.  This one is gooood. If you’re sad, be sad. If you’re pissed, be pissed. If you are jumping for joy, freakin’ jump for joy.  There is absolutely nothing productive in masking your emotions, or more importantly, there is nothing productive in acting like you are okay when you are not okay.  You are feeling certain things for a reason, so feel them.  Own your body, own your mind, never bury emotions, that is when they cause trouble.

3. You may be torn apart, but you will be built back stronger, and more beautiful than ever.

And, that’s okay.

4. Don’t forget about yourself.

This is one of my weaknesses.  In the end, it’s you and your life.  You’re the one who owns it, you’re the one who lives it.  Remember that.

5. Pressure is a privilege.

I wrote a lot about this one the other day on Instagram: you have pressure and stress because you are talented enough to posses something that causes it.

6. Actions speak louder than words.

Oldie, but good-ie. This applies to so much: saying you’re sorry has much less meaning than showing it, saying you want to accomplish something has much less meaning than working to achieve it.

7.  Not everyone will get you.

But, that shouldn’t change you.  That shouldn’t change anything about you, or how you act.

&& bonus 8. Life is more than you realize.

It may seem like the end of the world.  You may be wondering how on Earth you are going to make it through.  But, life is more than right now.  10 days from now, 10 weeks from now … this will all be a blip in your memory.  You will forget the struggle, and the hard times, and you will be left with beautiful memories and your incredible self formed through all of those hardships.

Act Without Knowing The Result

Act Without Knowing The Result

30 Day Blogging Challenge #24

I am tired of hearing I want.  To me, it’s almost as bad as I can’t.  You can tell me you want something as much as you desire, but what is the changing?  Please enlighten me, please explain to me this epidemic of wanting wanting wanting and walking through life continuing to want, being pulled by commonality and a monotonous daily routine without changing that want into have.  I am tired of hearing it.  If you want something, please realize right this very second that it is yours.   It may not be easy.  It may take time.  It may take sacrifice.  But if you want something enough to continually verbalize, or even think, about wanting it, for the sake of yourself, please take it.

(please watch^)

We grow up completing tasks and doing things for a reason. Your boss wants you to rearrange the filing cabinets, so you do it.  Your professor wants you to read a case study, so you do it.  Your mom wants you to walk the dog, so you do it.  All our lives, we prioritize the things that have reason.  We do things of which we know the outcome.

But did you ever think of the possibility of beginning a task without knowing what the result will be? Perpetually, that scares us because we have been Pavlonian-programmed to hop on to tasks that are not open ended.  We have done just that all of our lives.

So, that is why when we say we want [something] we rarely ever work towards [that thing].  We are unsure of how to jump into a world of unknown.  We are uncomfortable not having ‘reason’ and concrete confidence.  We aren’t used to it.   We are programmed to minimize uncertainty.

But that is life.  Life is uncertainty, that is the thrill of it. There is nothing wrong with that feeling, it is just one we have to get used to.  It is one that when we do get used to, will open up endless doors into endless opportunities.

Did you ever realize that you can change your want immediately into more if you just do.  Did you ever realize that there is no time more perfect than now?

Sure, uncertainty is unsettling but it is also rewarding and thrilling, it’s healthy.  It results in mental growth, change, and personality building.

And sure, you may fail, but one: we’ve talked about this before, and two: you may succeed beyond imagination.

Further than making your want into have, learning to do things for the mere reason of doing them is a skill to own.  Mark Manson put it perfectly:

Developing the ability to simply do things for no other reason than curiosity or interest or hell, even boredom — the ability to do things with no expectation for result or accolade or productivity or fanfare — will train you to better make these big ambiguous life decisions. It will train you to simply start on something without knowing where in the hell it’s going.

It can be scary, yes.  But it can also be one of the most rewarding talents you could ever learn.

I challenge you to do something over the next week for the mere hell of it.

I challenge you to stop saying I want and just do.

One more time for good measure.

Don’t be afraid of the unknown, YouMakeYou!

Colby

You’re Not Selfish

You’re Not Selfish

30 Day Blogging Challenge #18

Far too often we are so busy hiding in fear that we cannot chase our dreams (yes– I’ve said this before). What is one of the biggest fears we collectively have? Others.

We fear what people will think of us.

We fear if what we do will make others happy.

We fear what will happen if we ‘stray from the norm’.

Honestly, I teeter on the edge of saying we fear each other.  Can you tell me the last time you did something for yourself? Can you tell me the last day you didn’t wonder what someone thought about you or something you did?  Can you tell me the last time you didn’t do something because you were scared of what someone would think?  Can you tell me the last time you said ‘fuck you’ to the world and didn’t allow others to enter your thoughts and decisions?

Can you?

hapy

Being a college student, I am immersed in this behavior.  Every day, every hour, I am surrounded by the worry of satisfying others; the self-questioning, the self comprise.

To put it in as few words as possible,  I see people living for someone else.

Putting aside the severe pressure of society to follow a stigmatized norm, I think there is an intense fear of coming off as selfish, and honestly I’m tired of it. It’s sad and it is killing our generation.

It is also a misconception, do you know what the definition of selfish is?

Selfish; lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure.

Being completely and utterly wrapped up in yourself to a point where you are inconsiderate of others, that is selfish.

Deciding you don’t want to go to an event because you aren’t feeling it, that isn’t selfish.  You are allowed to enjoy different things.

Spending your time differently than those around you, that isn’t selfish. Your happiness is what matters most.

Not being able to be there for everyone’s dilemmas all of the time, that isn’t selfish.  You need to take care of yourself first.

Being or not being friends with someone your other friends aren’t/are, that isn’t selfish.  You choose what/who is apart of your life.

Getting rid of something negative in your life despite any outside influence that may be present, that isn’t selfish.  You deserve more than negativity.

Taking time for yourself, that isn’t selfish. It’s your life.

Deciding to stop being the sounding board for everyone else’s problems, that isn’t selfish. It’s not fair to you, you deserve more.

Not following the ‘social norm’, that isn’t selfish. We need more of that in this world.

Saying ‘screw this’ and completely uprooting to put yourself and your happiness first, that isn’t selfish.  This is your life, nobody else’s.

Following your dreams, even if they don’t line up with those around you perfectly, that isn’t selfish,

That is self loving.

That is what you were put here to do.

You have one life to live.

One.

The question is, will you make it the one you want?

You are the sole person in control.

Perfection Isn’t Real

Perfection Isn’t Real

30 Day Blogging Challenge #15.

Here was my day yesterday:

7:30 wakeup

7:40 begin 8 mile run

8:50 struggle to finish 8 mile run without throwing up

9:00 decide the fact that my stomach has hurt 24/7 for the past two weeks  and ^ happening meant it was time to go to Urgent Care

9:20 get a completely flat tire on the way there, I’m talking 100 to 0 in 5 seconds

9:30 call my parents bawling my eyes out because everything was going wrong

9:40 get my shit together enough to leave my car and take a taxi to and from Urgent Care

11:30 return from Urgent Care where they put me on an antibiotic because they were unsure what was up

11:40 call AAA to fix my tire

1:00 AAA puts a donut on my tire, I tip him $20 because that is the only bill  I had on me, and I make animg_0015 appointment at Goodyear for 3pm to get a real tire

1:oo-2:45 I attempt to make up some of the work I was missing in classes that day

3:00-5:20 sit at Goodyear, still with stomach pain, until my car is fixed

6:00-7:00 bike at the gym until enough stress was released

8:00-an hour ago sleep 12 hours and pretend like yesterday didn’t happen

I didn’t post this for sympathy, or anything like that at all.  I posted this because I am human, everyone is human, and being human means not everything will be glitter and rainbows all of the time.  Not everything will be perfect, and that is OK.  I posted this because I get too many emails and DM’s asking how I keep my sh!t together so well, how I keep my mindset on right all of the time, how I live so “perfectly” and as much as I love hearing from each and everyone of you (srsly keep it up), just because I run a blog and an IG, that does not make me any different from you! I have hiccups in the road, exhibit 100000^ and of course I have days where I am just not feelin it.  We all do. There is a quote

“There is a crack in everything, that is how the light gets in.”

and that quote is the truth.  Sure, maybe I don’t post my struggles on here as often as I post the better moments, but the tougher times are the ones that teach me lessons, the ones that make me stronger, the ones that ground me and push me to remember what I am here for.  Times like yesterday are the ones that challenge me, the ones that change me, the ones that help me become me.

The bad days are there for a reason–we just have to accept them, let them build us, and move on.

As perfect as you can try to be, and take it from a type a perfectionist… perfection. isn’t. real. YOU are real.

See you tomorrow– You Make You!

Maintainable Steps To A Successful Morning // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #14

Maintainable Steps To A Successful Morning // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #14

You spill your morning coffee, and it’s all downhill from there. You are late for work, you get yelled at by a co worker, you forgot your lunch, you can’t focus….

Me ^

It’s the domino effect.

lol done^

The first few hours of your day set the stage for the remainder of your day. Today, I want to share with you 5 do-able steps to setting your day up for success. When you are done reading, leave a comment below with your favorite part of your morning routine, I want to know!

Wake up, slay, repeat.. your guide:

  • Open your blinds. Let the natural light in. Studies have shown that our eyes and brains function more optimally with natural lighting. Benefits also include: the increase of Vitamin D which boosts overall wellness, the regulation of our circadian sleep patterns, and a decrease in your energy bill!
  • Spend 2-5 minutes giving yourself one goal for the day. What is one thing you can do today that is a small step towards your goals.
  • Smile What are you excited for today? What is one thing you are grateful for? Think about these things. Look at a quote, read an inspirational passage — do something that makes you smile.
  • Make someone else smile. Send a friend a good morning text, you will no question brighten their day.  Compliment someone. SMILE at someone, they will smile back. Encouraging others is key to having a positive outlook on life.
  • Move. I always workout in the morning because it not only releases endorphins, but also wakes me up to conquer the day. If you don’t have time to workout, just MOVE— go for a walk, stretch, do some jumping jacks.
  • Recite your affirmations/goals. Spend just a few moments grounding yourself. What are your goals? What are you grateful for? You can make a sort of motto out of this to continually remind yourself throughout the day as well. Can you guess mine?;) You Make You !!!
  • Check in with YouMakeYou Obviously 😉

Spare just a few minutes each morning to go through these steps and your entire day will be set up for success.  Now, what is your favorite part of your morning routine? Comment below!

See you tomorrow…

xoxo You Make You,

Stress Is Good // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #13

Stress Is Good // 30 Day Blogging Challenge #13

If there is one thing in this world that anyone could relate to, it would be stress.  Stress is inevitable.

Let’s break it down.

Stress; a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension.

OK, so stress is a state of being that causes tension. Let’s define tension.

Tension; inner striving, unrest, or imbalance often with physiological indication of emotion.

But, that is not the only definition of tension.  In artwork,

Tension;  a balance maintained in an artistic work between opposing forces or element.

The point I am trying to make here, is that tension and stress are not, by definition, negative rather they have become perceived as negative by the world we live in.  By definition stress causes tension in the body, and tension is nothing more than something being out of it’s normal state.

We live in a world where stress is one of the most common factors to daily life, and with that, stress has developed a negative connotation.  I don’t want to sit here and tell you that stress is all great for you, but I do want to challenge you to change your perception on stress and see how your body reacts.

What if you perceived stress as positive? What if when your heart was racing and you were nervous, instead of letting an uncomfortable feeling take over, you told yourself that these things are happening to you because your body is ramping up for the challenge, your body is helping you prepare for what is ahead?  What if you believed the feelings you are experiencing are your body’s way of saying ‘I got this!’?

What if when you are sitting at your desk feeling stressed about work, instead of feeling overwhelmed, you use that as your body’s warning sign to take a step back, take a deep breathe, and make a nice schedule for yourself.

What if instead of letting stress stress you out, you let stress assist you in staying in tune with yourself.

What if you stopped giving stress the power to hold you back and instead allowed it to motivate you forward.

This is all as simple as a decision to change your mindset, this is what YouMakeYou® is about– realizing that YOU are the one with the power to control your life and then TAKING that power.

Will you take the challenge?

Colby
